Childhood Friendships Don’t Always Last. And That’s OK.

It happens all the time, the best of friends from our formative years tend to be less present in our lives as we get older, and it becomes harder and harder to keep in touch. Sometimes that person we used to see on a daily basis only pays us a visit once a year, or sometimes less. While it’s not always the case often times childhood friends drift apart, it usually happens naturally, and here are three reasons why that’s ok.

Family first. As we grow older we naturally tend to couple up and pair offer, marriage is in the cards for many of us, and so are children down the road, which definitely demands a prioritization of our time. Many of us have aging parents to tend to as well, only adding to the obligations and leaving little time for old friends. It’s only natural that we put family first, and family obligations don’t always leave us as much time to maintain old friendships as we’d like.

Distance is difficult. Not everyone spends their entire life where they grew up, the world is a big place and opportunities can sometimes take us far from home. Great distances can often put a strain on even the closest of friendships, and it’s just a natural part of life when it happens.

Interests change. Let’s be honest, we’re not all the same people we were back in school. As our personalities developed so did our interests, and sometimes we find ourselves losing the common interests that made for our best friendships. Life is a matter of evolution, and it’s something that needs to be accepted in order to move on.
